Google Sheets: Sheets vs Excel

Google Sheets is a free spreadsheet programme available to anyone with a Google account. Many businesses are finding that working with both Excel and Sheets has advantages for productivity and collaboration. Sheets can perform all the spreadsheet functions that most users would need and has several important advantages over Excel.  

This workshop will compare Sheets to Excel,
allow you to use your Excel skills in Sheets and at the same time take advantage of the extra features that Sheets offers, especially in sharing and collaborating with others who are using the same sheet at the same time.  It will also cover some of the basic features of Sheets and how to quickly and easily convert.  Attendees will use their existing knowledge of Excel and apply it to Sheets.

Skills needed:
This is an intermediate level course for those who are reasonably confident users of Excel (and maybe Sheets) and who would like to become proficient in Sheets to be able to take advantage of using the two applications together.

A general comparison between Sheets and Excel

Features unique to Sheets:

  • Collaborative usage and sharing
  • Version history
  • Working offline
  • Transferring worksheets between Excel and Sheets

Some Sheets’ functions:

  • Product
  • Googlefinance
  • Googletranslate
  • Inserting images
  • Countunique
  • Sparklines
  • Table-like features – sorting and filtering

Requirements: Attendees must bring their own laptops (not tablets) with Excel, and have a Google account. The workshop will require the internet which is complimentary, but attendees should ensure that their computers can log onto the internet.  It may be advisable to come to the session a few minutes earlier to set things up.
Please inform the training provider if you will be bringing a Mac laptop.

This workshop is interactive and attendees will gain hands-on experience.  Raw data to work with and detailed notes will be provided.

Cancellation Policy:
Any cancellation and/or changes must be made in writing to the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce no less than ten working days prior to the course in order to receive a full refund/credit. No refund or credit will be given for cancellations made after this or for non-attendance at the course.
