Honey firm hits sweet spot at business awards
Five years ago James Annabell gave his father Toby a beehive he'd bought on Trade Me as a Christmas present.
That was the start of Egmont Honey Ltd and on Saturday night the company won the region's top business accolade when it clinched the Supreme Award at the TSB Taranaki Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards.
James Annabell told that story when he accepted the award from TSB chief executive Donna Cooper at the packed black tie event at the TSB Stadium on Saturday night.
"A month later we bought 100 more hives and today we have 4000," he said.
"We export to 18 countries, and this region is a big part of our story and we tell that story over and over. But the most important part of our business is our people. We wouldn't be where we are today without them."
"We were also very impressed with the leadership and management of Egmont Honey and the company demonstrates a very high level of commitment to excellence in serving its customers and suppliers for long term mutual benefit."
Egmont Honey featured prominently in the various categories, and along with Egmont Seed, Climate & Plumbing, Ricoh Taranaki and Safe Business Solutions made several trips to the podium during the evening.
The Annabell family come from South Taranaki and while the company has its origins there, these days it operates from a new purpose-built factory in New Plymouth.
James was also well known as a hooker for the Taranaki rep rugby team from 2006-08.
