ASD Connex is a non-profit group started by New Plymouth local, Theresa Tongi in 2014, after two of her four children were diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder. Theresa and her husband Pat saw the need for support for families in New Plymouth walking a similar journey.
The group meet every month, where the team of volunteers provide a relaxing environment for parents to meet together over afternoon tea while their children with ASD play in a safe and friendly environment. They also provide a much needed respite care service once a month so parents can have a break.
They currently operate from Park City Church where they have access to a café and a play area for the children, however with over 50 families registered the space is quickly becoming too small for what they would like to achieve. Consequently the group has begun fundraising for a purpose-built facility in New Plymouth.
Check out their Facebook page for more information on upcoming events including the Sapphire Ball on April 28, 2018 featuring guest speaker Sir Michael Jones.
