Tim is the firm's senior litigation partner.
He helps clients to resolve disputes in a wide range of corporate and commercial areas. He has taken cases in energy law, resource management, banking, forestry, insurance, trusts, construction, employment, real estate, shareholders'/directors' liabilities and in the general areas of contract and negligence. Tim also advises clients on dealing with public sector entities such as local authorities, the Commerce Commission and Maritime New Zealand.
As Crown Solicitor, Tim leads a team of lawyers responsible for the prosecution of serious crime in Taranaki. The appointment also involves advising government departments on many regulatory issues. This experience has proved valuable when advising corporate clients.
Tim has particular expertise and knowledge in the areas of:
- corporate and commercial disputes resolution/litigation
- crown prosecution
During his time as part-time Commissioner of the Law Commission, many of the law reforms recommended by Tim have been adopted by the Government and have either been enacted or are before Parliament. Tim has appeared before a number of Select Committees.
Tim has involvement with the New Zealand Law Society, by way of:
- two appointments as director of the Society's Litigation Skills Programme
- serving on committees and co-presenting two seminars
- a faculty member for the Society's Expert Witness Programme.
Tim has a strong interest in military law stemming from his service in New Zealand's Army Reserve. He holds the rank of Brigadier and in 2009 retired from the post of Director-General of Reserve Forces to serve as a special project officer in Afghanistan undertaking a review of New Zealand's military involvement in that country.
As a member of the Courts-Martial Panel of Advocates, in 2001, Tim was responsible for the prosecution of a case which convened in England and Bosnia to take evidence of witnesses of five different nationalities. He was appointed a Judge Advocate in 2004 and a Judge of the Court Martial of New Zealand in 2009.
Tim was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honours.
